Collection:

Analytical time- 24 hours per day, 7 days a week

All samples handled stat (within 15 minutes)

All samples must be accompanied by a completed blood gas requistion  (Pulm function)

Samples can be arterial, capillary, venous, mixed venous or fetal scalph.

Arterial:

Specimen drawn into air-free lithium heparinized syringe with needle removed and syringe end with airtight cap.  All specimens must be labeled with patient’s name and hospital number.  Indicate on the requistion the fraction of inspired oxygen concentration or room air if applicable.  Precautions should be identified.

Capillary:

Fill both hemocrit tubes completely excluding any air bubbles.  All specimens must be labeled with patient’s name and hospital number.  Indicate on the requistion mode of oxygen delivery  and FIO2.

Venous:

Specimen drawn into air-free lithium heparinized syringe with needle removed and syringe end sealed with airtight cap.  Air bubbles should  be removed prior to capping of sample and prior to mixing.  Indicate on the requistion the fraction of inspired oxygen concentration or room air if applicable, patient’s name, hospital number, and location.  Precautions should be identified.  Indicate specimen source (ie.venous).
