Mott Respiratory Care

The PCTU is a twelve bed pediatric intensive care unit for the pre and post operative care of neonates, children and adults with congenital heart disease.  The respiratory therapist is a part of a specialized team including cardiologists, surgeons, registered nurses and health aids care for patients admitted to the ICU.  The respiratory therapist is in charge of all oxygen, and ventilation management needs of these patients, the majority of which are directly admitted from the operating room. There are approximately 700 open-heart surgeries for complex congenital heart disease are performed each year.  Due to the surgical nature of the unit, rapid weaning protocols and modalities such as “Automode” are routine practice for the respiratory therapist assigned to the area.

Our ICU is part of the Michigan Congenital Heart Center, a world-renowned program that treats patients from all fifty states and throughout the world.
